Crime at the 99 Unreported Incidents
In addition to aggregating news stories, CrimeAtThe99.com also shares information provided directly from victims whose stories have not been covered in the press.
One such story involves a violent assault that occurred at the 99 Cents Only Store in Los Angeles at 852 N. La Brea Ave. on October 16, 2023.
A customer was violently assaulted by another shopper who one witness described as a transient. According to information provided, the store’s security guard apparently fled the scene when the assault began, and store employees refused to allow the victim to call police (the victim’s phone was destroyed during the attack). Furthermore, it is believed 99 Cents Only Store has not cooperated with the Los Angeles Police Department on its investigation – failing to provide surveillance video of the incident.
Once again, this case illustrates the company’s attitude of indifference when it comes to ensuring a safe environment for customers and assisting police with investigations.
UPDATE 2/7/24: While the LAPD finally received access to the surveillance video, the investigation of this assault is hampered due to the what is described as very low quality video from an apparently outdated and poorly-placed camera system. Therefore, this case is likely to remain unsolved. According to the detective assigned to the case, video provided by the 99 Cents Only Store is of such poor quality that it cannot be used with LAPD’s criminal facial recognition system to help identify the assailant.
